John Miller Entry
I am john Miller, I am in my early thirties and am living with 2 children and a wife who is never satisfied. Her name is Gwen and she is also in her early
thirties, my first child is named Jonathan Miller who I am quite proud of and my second is James Miller who is the black sheep of this family. I sadly do not
expect much from him in his life. My wife does not understand everything I buy is for the family and only what we need to survive. They don't understand being a factory worker for ford only allows you enough money to support your family not go out and splurge it on anything you want. I believe we live a good life. I given my family clothes, food and a roof they can sleep under. I even gave my wife a sewing machine and a washer so she wont complain about our clothes getting dirty and all beat up. The reason I did not buy new clothes was so she could repair them yet it is not enough for her. My children do not have much nice things in their life but at least I am teaching them the value of a dollar and to work hard for a better future. At the worst my wife is very abusive I fear she will kill me is I don't watch out.
Now that the war is over business is starting to slow down for our family and many of my fellow factory workers as well. The days of the war were amazing for our family but now that its over America is changing. Our economy is picking up again though and that is through stocks. With the little money I have left over I think I will put it into stocks. it is about thirty dollars, not enough but I am sure it will be a profit. These stock prices are so low at the moment and I know they will raise. I soon I will be able to buy nice things for my family with these stocks, they just keep rising. There is this new thing called buying things on credit. It is where you can buy half or less of something like a car and pay for it monthly. I don't think this is right for my family. What if we cant pay it off I say. My wife and kids jeep asking me to buy a car but I keep putting them down. I just don't like the idea of being in debt when you don't have money. My wife tells me to also buy more stocks and on margin. But with thirty dollars put in that's nothing.
God how I miss the creamy taste of a good beer. I have not had a drop since alcohol has been outlawed. My friend back at the factory tells me no one follows the that dumb law and that he knows a place where they sell alcohol even more than they used too. When I asked him what if the police found out he says they do know, that theirs a couple of cops that go in every Friday night and drink away. I could not believe him so he
invited me to go this Saturday. Cant wait to see this for myself. After my son Jonathan returned from school he said he met a new friend. When I asked him about him he said he lived in Harlem and said it was amazing place. When I asked him about the place he described it like a wonderland. He said it was a place where all the music came from as it was blown out from an instrument. He says it is where jazz must have been born or at the least improved. He also told me that all the colored people lived there and asked if we could go one day. His description of the place made me want to go as well as him. So I promised I would take him and when we did go it was everything we thought it would be. Now in days you cant even go on the street without worrying of getting killed. All these rolling metal carts are now everywhere. They call them automobiles and they are surely everywhere. My wife says it is a symbol of being American. She also says we are the only ones on the block that don't have one and that its unpatriotic to not. She talks to me about these cars like she knows everything about them. But how would she know I am the one who breaks my back making them. Sometimes I tell myself, thank god I do not have girls as children. Now in days young women are changing more and more. I have a friend who has a teenage daughter and he says it is the worst. He says she is always acting out and wearing shorter than ever all the way down to their knees, unbelievable. They call themselves flappers and they leave the house and live their lives however way they want. Even by themselves if they want too which is fine with me. At the beaches they are the sight to see. Beats looking at my hideous wife. My new favorite thing in America is baseball and it is amazing. After seeing my first game with my sons we all fell in love. It is a sport of men and I know it will be around far after my death. I bought me and my sons a mitt the other day with little money I had. I hid them from the wife so she wouldn't nag me. Then I took my sons out and we all played catch. It may too late for me but if they want to go out and be baseball players I wont stop them. In fact I will encourage them.

Jonathan Miller Entry
My name is Jonathan Miller and I am 13 years old. My family has many fights and my mother always threatens my father. We live in a two bedroom apartment in the city. My father's name is John, my mother's name is Gwyn, and my older brother's name is
James. I have a few friends at school, but they don't have much different lives compared to me.
Right now everyone I see is always happy. Every store is always packed and so many more people have cars. I suspect it's because of the stocks my father is always talking about is why everyone is so happy and always buying things. My father mentioned the stocks being the reason why everyone is wealthy, and said that we were going to try them some day. We don't have much money to spend on extra cash, but I hope we at least get enough money for my parents
to get something for me and my brother.
My dad was talking about a new music type that is becoming really popular called jazz. It seems interesting and fresh from typical every day life. My mother was talking about getting a job to get more money to pay for things, and she also mentioned that it might be for getting a car for the family. I've been seeing many people go to barber
shops and also seeing them close early. I'm not sure why but I'm curious as to
why

James Miller Entry
This is my first time that I’m going to write a diary and now this is my chance to write something about
my life. I finally was able to pass my 7th grade English class. Feeling very excited to write about my life, since in the pass my English skills were not so great. This didn’t allow me to write a journal due
to my lack of confidence of writing one; since I got afraid that someone would make fun of me. Now that I
have confidences, I’ll start to introduce my life and myself. My name James Miller, and I’m 12 years old living with my brother and my parents. My parents name is John Miller and Gwyn Miller, and my brother name is Jonathon Miller. We are the Miller family living in a two-room apartment somewhere in New York… I think (there goes my confidence). I go to middle school with my older brother Jonathon as my father works at a Ford factory. The only thing that I know about the Ford factory is that the well-paid workers are the most experience and hard working people. My father is one of them, so every month our income is 220$ dollars per month. Which he got lucky for, since my father return back from the Great War not many veterans soldiers were able to find jobs. Due to lack of opening jobs, but my father are the few who were able to find a job that pays well. At home we live in a good decent life (almost), we have everything that are needed for our everyday life. But my father and mother sometimes fight each other and threaten each other. My mother is the only one that cleans the house while we were gone, and the rest of her day is with us. When my brother and me return back from school, we have nothing to play, so we play with rocks. At least we have food, furniture, clothing, and a home, but we don’t have the money for
entertainment.
It is true that my father makes 220$ per month, but is not enough for us, so my parents decided to buy a stock. At first I didn’t know about the stock until my parents told me that a stock is what corporation rise in money that shares it to the public. So they bought 3 stocks and one was give to the four of us. With only 30$ we have left after spending on our important items that we need, we bought Gregory Radio for 20$, we bought Steve Clothing for 5$, we bought Erin Education for 5$, and a stock was given to us Sy’s Soda for each of us for a 1$. My father told me that he was hoping for the stock price to rise so that he can sell it for a good amount of profit. So we as a family go some places and maybe buy a automobile for us to go places. Then he told me that he didn’t bought on margins since he wanted to be careful since the stock could go down losing profits. When that happen my father told me that he owns money and that we don’t have much money saved in the bank.
Talking about the stocks and economic system, which I get confuse about, I’ll write about things that I wish that I had experience and enjoyed which is the automobile. My family couldn’t afford the automobile, it is ironic; since my father works at a factory that builds automobiles and we could have bought with credit, but my family didn’t want to. Just by looking at people who has the automobiles seems to enjoy it and seems that they are strangers to me. Since they come from a long distance that I don’t know where they from. But than again the automobile is nothing compare to radios. My neighbor has a radio and my family sometimes visits his house to able to listen to the radio, including more people in this neighbor visit his house. For this reason, we know each other, so I know every one in this neighborhood. We sometimes make little party, socialize, and grow bonds with each other. Making me feel more social and have some other kids at my age to play, thank you radio! This remind me, the radio also inform us about a guy name Charles Lindbergh, a few days ago, who flew across the Atlantic Ocean to France. Reaching there alive, becoming the first pilot to cross the Atlantic Ocean since there were other 6 pilots that attempt it and die. Kind makes feel to become a pilot just like him, but I’m scared of heights. But I heard some people talking a few days a ago about how our technology is improving. Then one man explains that Charles rode improve one engine plane, so that is the reason why he was able to cross the Atlantic Ocean. If that is true who knows about the future technology, but I don’t even own a technology, I feel sadden. This kind of reminds me about the other things that happen to my father friend a day later after the podcast of Charles. During the time, some of the neighbor and my parents were listening to the radio. While my brother, and I were playing outside, then my father’s friend come and visit to listen the radio. We decided to see what is going on, since we have nothing better to do and how it is the first time he come to listen to the radio. Through out the conversation, I learn something weird about an organization, called the KKK. I don’t even understand the letters KKK means, but I heard that they tried to recruit to my father’s friend,
but he rejected the offer. Then he explains that they threaten him to join using force, but eventually they left. It must be very scary, since the organization was in large groups. Then my father explains that the KKK is an organization that is against African-American rights and freedom. That they go as far as killing Africans-Americans and along with other Americans that supports the rights and freedom of Africans-Americans. I don’t get it, I meant an African-American boy who was playing at the park alone. With just my brother, and me we decided to have him play with us. We learn that his name is Timothy and is from Harlem. We asked him, what is Harlem. He told us that many Africans-Americans lived there and that many Africans-Americans have enjoy living there due to many freedom they have to practice their culture. He even told us the music Jazz; through out the time I listen to the radio I have heard music without knowing the name of the genre of the music. Then he told us that there are many Jazz performances that take place in Harlem that even
white people visit to hear the music. Hearing from the white
people they call it the Harlem Renaissance. He told us he misses being in Harlem since he
enjoys being there. Seems like I still have a long way to go to write about my life… It was a good idea in my head,
so now my confidence is gone…

Gwyn Miller Entry
Dear Dairy,
My name is Gwyn Miller and I am
32 years old and live my family John Miller my husband, Jonathan and James
Miller who are our sons. My life is average because our family is not poor but
we are not rich since my husband makes a income of 220 dollars a month. I don't
work like my husband because I stay at home to take care of the house and clean
and make food for everyone. I like to sew for fun since it is a nice hobby to do
when I stay at home for most of the days. My kids are still young but my husband
is a verteran for the Great War that had took many by surprise and he came back
ok since he didn't have any serious wounds.
Lately
the United State's economy has bloomed to large poportions since everyone seems
to be making a lot of money. This new boom in econmy is good for us because we
made a little bit more money than what we were making previously and this new
prosperity in our economy lead to an increase in the stock market. From what I
heard the stock market is where people you hire can buy a part of companies
shares to earn money if they are doing well. Our family bought some stocks so we
can make some money off the stock market and we invested 30 dollars into it. We
hope to make a lot of money like a couple of hundred dollars so we can buy more
things for the family.
Lately a lot of new cultural things are happening in
the United States and this new phenomenon is known as the Roaring 20s'. From
what I heard from the past generation they think women are more wildier and
looser since the past generations women wore long skirts and long hair but now
women wear shorter skirts and shorter hair. Now there is a new invention that
brings people around called the radio and from the radio voices come out of it.
It can play music, tell us what is happening in sports games, and recently it
tells us coverage of presidential campaigns and I think it is a great invention
to bring friends and family around the house. There is a new law that was passed
to prohibit the consumption of alcohol and people are calling it prohinition
because it is illegal to drink alcohol because it is suppose to clean up the
morals of many Americans.
